IBIS Yearbook (1927-1959) Now Available Online

ibis
IBIS, the University of Miami’s yearbook, has been published annually since 1927.

The University of Miami Archives has recently completed a significant digitization project resulting in online access to one of the University’s oldest and most-cherished publications, IBIS yearbook. The first 33 volumes of IBIS, from 1927 to 1959, are now available for browsing and research through the University of Miami Libraries’ website. The collection is fully searchable by keyword, and images can be saved or printed for research or personal use.

The project, which began in fall 2013, was completed in collaboration with the Libraries’ Preservation, Digital Production, Cataloging & Metadata, and Web & Application Development departments.

1927-foreword
Foreword from IBIS, 1927, stating “we hope [this yearbook] will prove as good a guide to those who follow as the blazed trail was to the settlers of the western frontier.” (Click to enlarge.)
Housed at the University Archives in the Otto G. Richter Library, the entire yearbook collection is one of the most frequently researched archival resources by the UM community. It’s also considered a record of enduring historical value on subjects ranging from student life and campus activities to regional and national events. The publication is a frequent past recipient of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Gold Crown Award, the highest honor for college yearbooks in the country.

You can visit the University Archives, located on the eighth floor of the Otto G. Richter Library, on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please contact University Archivist Koichi Tasa for questions or suggestions on archiving and using historical resources of the University of Miami.

UML Renovation Update: Temporary Access Procedures to Off-Site Materials

The University of Miami Libraries (UML) is beginning the first phase of renovations to Brockway Hall, a historic space on the first floor of Richter Library that will serve as the new home of Special Collections and University Archives.

Starting April 2, we will be relocating materials that are currently shelved at Brockway Hall to UML’s off-site storage facility in Miami Lakes. This will result in limited access to materials stored off-site (as indicated in the catalog) from our general collections as well as those from Special Collections, University Archives, and the Cuban Heritage Collection. Further details will soon follow on temporary procedures during each project phase for requesting these materials. Stay tuned for these updates on our website.

We will also be launching a website in the coming weeks that will provide more information about the new space and include detailed updates on this project.

In the meantime, please contact us with any questions pertaining to near-future use of off-site materials. (Please note that this project will only affect access to materials that are stored off-site. For materials housed on-site at our libraries and collections, regular access will apply throughout the project.)

Call Us Before Your Visit

As announced earlier this month, the University of Miami Libraries has begun the first phase of renovations of the public and storage spaces for the Special Collections and University Archives. The project will be carried out throughout 2015.

In order to prepare for the renovations, we had to move our less frequently researched collections from Brockway Hall to our offsite storage facility in Miami Lakes. Examples of collections relocated include the Office of the President Records, University of Miami Press publications, bound volumes of The Miami Hurricane, and several organizational records of the university’s schools and departments.

Please call us before you visit us at the Special Collections Reading Room, as some of the items we used to be able to retrieve while you waited may no longer be available on site. We will do our best to retrieve requested items, such as a book and organizational records in 1-2 boxes, in a few working days. We may need more time to retrieve larger collections. Please note that delivery service from Miami Lakes to Richter will not be available from April 20 to May 6, while Richter Library stays open 24/7 during the final exams.

During the renovations from June to December 2015, the Special Collections and University Archives remain fully open at the Cuban Heritage Collection’s Conference Room on the 2nd floor of Richter Library. Our frequently researched materials, such as IBIS and other university publications, Historical Photograph Collection, and Campus Architecture Collection are still available in the temporary reading room. We apologize for the inconvenience during the renovations.

Looking for a Trace of Sylvester Stallone

It is a well-known fact that Sylvester Stallone studied at the University of Miami in the late 1960s. However, we have never seen pictures of him anywhere in our collections. Digitization of the University’s historical publications, such as The Miami Hurricane, Veritas, Historical Photograph Collection, and Tempo, makes it possible to search content with keyword searches, but my search of “Sylvester Stallone” came up empty.

Why can’t I find anything on the legendary alumnus? That is because his name was not Sylvester Stallone when he was a student at the U. He was Michael (or Mike) according to my research in the historical resources. After this discovery, I was able to search our digitized collections and quickly found mention of the actor in reviews of two student plays, “The Trial” (1968) and “Calvary” (1969), in The Miami Hurricane. Please go to the links to read the articles.

(April 1, 1968 issue on The Trial. See p. 6)

(May 9, 1969 issue on Calvary. See p.7)

Do you think he was in the picture of the May 9, 1969, article? I will contact Dr. Josephine Johnson, director of the performance, who is an alumna of the College of Arts and Sciences and former Chair of the Department of Communications. She has donated her papers and significant materials on William Butler Yeats and his circle to the Richter Library. While teaching at UM, Dr. Johnson also directed and participated in poetry performances in the Miami area.

Upon request of the College of Arts and Sciences, we digitized the complete issues of their Arts & Sciences magazine. Please go to the link below to browse the issues or research the entire content by keyword. We are delighted to work on this project, because the publication has enduring research value on the College’s activities, faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Arts and Sciences Magazine Archive Online

Arts & Sciences has been published by the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Miami since 1998 in the fall and spring. The predecessors of the publication, AlumNews (1978-1981), Focus (1982-83), and Cornerstone (1992-1997) as well as Making History (Fall & Winter 2005 by the History Department) are made available in the digital collection.

Digitization of the A&S magazine is a collaboration of Richter Library in Preservation, Digital Production, Cataloging & Metadata, Digital Repository, and the University Archives.
